BCM206 Week 9 Blog

My remediation of this week is a a direct quote from my favorite reading of week 9. Julian Assange is not someone that I knew allot about before reading No Secretes Julian Assange’s mission for total transparency. This quote resonated with me because it helped me recognised the duplicity of wiki leaks in relation to the concept of accountability. In a broader sense this can be applied to organisations such as anonymous. Anonymity is what shields the group of accountability just as secretes shield governments from accountability. As for now it seems these groups have an altruistic motive.

Whistle blowers are extremely important in ensuring that journalists have access to legitimate sources when it comes to disseminating information to the public. The videos that Assange realised of the military in Iraq was enabled through a whistle blower, this is when anonymity because vital to protect these sources and encourage others to speak out. People need to feel as is they wont be held accountable for attempting to make companies and governments accountable.

  1. I also didn’t know heaps about Julian Assange before this week, it was really interesting to learn more, especially about WikiLeaks. I really like the quote you’ve chosen, definitely makes you think! Although I think that formatting your remediation as a YouTube video rather than a gif makes it a little harder to digest.
Whistleblowers and anonymity and such important features of media and the sharing of information, I think you’re absolutely right in saying that access to legitimate sources is crucial to sharing information to the public. In my blog, I focused on the networked fourth estate. (Feel free to check it out! https://alinahager.home.blog/2020/10/18/anonymous-resistance-the-networked-fourth-estate/). Particularly, how important it is for traditional media corporations to collaborate with individuals and organizations so that there are more diverse and legitimate sources enabling the collection of global information. Slight side note, but do you think that when traditional media channels share misinformation (fake news) it is deliberate or a result of illegitimate sources?
Also, I think you might find this article on anonymity particularly interesting –> https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/3-undeniable-reasons-need-online-anonymity/#:~:text=Online%20anonymity%20also%20plays%20an,who%20are%20actively%20being%20silenced.&text=However%2C%20for%20many%20others%20who,be%20heard%20while%20remaining%20safe.

  2. Hey Laura, great read! I decided to focus on Julian Assange as my main topic in my remediation too, its an extremely interesting story. Its crazy to think he is regarded as a hero by some, and a reckless, dangerous vigilante by others. Anonymous is a good example to wrap into your blog to establish that grey area of accountability and anonymity. As we become more and more engrained in this emergent digital world, it is going to be interesting to see the extent hacking and pen-testing can get to. I speak more about pen-testing in relation to hacking subculture in my blog if you wanna check that out, cheers! https://leotwemlow.wordpress.com/2020/10/19/bcm206-week-9-hacking/
